Everybody’s a sucker for free stuff, yours truly included. It’s no surprise then that Battlefield Heroes, EA’s cartoon-style third-person shooter, has already reached one million registrants.
What is surprising is the amount of time it took to reach that magic number. If you recall, Battlefield Heroes came out just a little over three weeks ago. I’m guessing the game probably gets at least 40,000 new players daily.
For the uninitiated, Battlefield Heroes is a sandbox-style multiplayer game that comes with avatar customization. Of course, like other multiplayer shooters, changing your avatar’s appearance has no bearing on gameplay. Customization items are available for Valor Points (points earned by playing the game) or with Battlefunds (a fictional currency bought via credit card or PayPal) so players can update or change their hero’s look at any time.
So while the game is free, EA still manages to rake the bucks in with microtransactions. What, did you think EA was doing this out of the good of their hearts?
Let’s just hope that this million-strong population won’t slow Battlefield Heroes down significantly. How’s the Battlefield Heroes experience been for you so far?
