Why I’m concerned about Dead Space 2

Dead Space with teabagging? I think not.

Dead Space with teabagging? I think not.

You’ve probably heard by now that Dead Space 2 is coming. If you loved the original Dead Space, then there’s plenty to be excited about. However, if you’re a curmudgeon like me, then you might still be a few things that don’t seem right. You see, as much as I liked the original, I have a couple of concerns about Dead Space 2.

First: (Spoiler Warning!) Remember the Dead Space ending? Wasn’t Isaac Clarke was attacked by Nicole in Necromorph form? I clearly recall the screen immediately going dark, then the game ended. This gave me the impression that Isaac Clarke was slain. When EA announced the sequel, it revealed that Isaac Clarke would return in Dead Space 2. Ergo, Isaac did survive the Necromorph attack. When you think about it in retrospect, what then was the purpose of the final scene?

Second: Dead Space 2 is coming with multiplayer. Can you imagine Dead Space, a survival horror game, with teabagging? Can you hear the potty-mouthed tweens yelling politically-incorrect names through the headset? I can’t. Sure, other games may be doing the same, but that doesn’t mean developer Visceral Games should join the bandwagon.

Of course, this is just me thinking aloud—my opinion, if you will. A multiplayer mode or possible retcon wouldn’t stop me from playing (or enjoying) Dead Space 2. Here’s to fewer of those cheap “gotcha” scares and more mind screwing.
